Following the 2025 PCST Network Conference in Aberdeen, the Journal of Science Communication (JCOM) has published a special issue titled Transitions in Science Communication: Continuity and Change. Released on 13 July 2026, the issue continues the long-standing collaboration between the PCST Network and JCOM, exploring how the field of science communication is evolving.
Selected from more than 50 abstract submissions, the special issue includes an invited essay, five research articles and two practice insights that showcase emerging research agendas and innovative approaches from around the world.
The collection opens with an essay by Prof. Sarita Albagli, based on her conference keynote address, examining the links between citizen science, environmental justice and data justice. Other contributions explore topics including the role of science museums in advancing gender equity, the changing relationship between journalists and scientists, and creative approaches to public engagement such as improvisational theatre for climate communication and zine-making to address mental health stigma.
The special issue was edited by four members of the PCST Scientific Committee: Declan Fahy (Dublin City University), Alice Fleerackers (University of Amsterdam), Ana Claudia Nepote (National Autonomous University of Mexico) and Guoyan Wang (Soochow University). In their editorial, the editors reflect on both the progress made in science communication and the continuing challenges of global inequality and knowledge distribution, expressing the hope that the collection will inspire further innovation and critical reflection.
