I am a professor of science communication at the University of Tokyo. I focus on East Asian perspectives and have led projects on AI, climate ethics, trust in science, and women in science. For 10 years, I have been a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Science Communication. In Japan, I started a study group on science communication and contributed to policy by preparing reports for the council to guide science communication strategies.
Although there are many unique activities in Japan, the language barrier makes it hard for them to gain international recognition. Social norms influenced by Confucianism and Buddhism have the potential to create pathways to social empathy in science communication, rather than relying on direct appeals. My goal is to help develop science communication by linking practical activities to PCST.
