All of these events are organised by members of the PCST Scientific Committee and all address in different ways the state of research in science communication and its relations with practice.
Committee member Luisa Massarani will host a seminar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 31 July-1 August, on science communication as an academic subject. The speakers at this event include former committee members Dominique Brossard and Bruce Lewenstein (both USA) and current members Marina Joubert (South Africa) and Melanie Smallman (UK).
In October, committee member Massimiano Bucchi will host a seminar in Trento, Italy, which is also supported by the journal Public Understanding of Science he edits, and which is 25 years old this year. This seminar will review science communication research over the past two decades and consider the prospects for the next two decades. Science historian Steven Shapin (USA) is among the confirmed speakers, with more names to be announced soon.
In November, also in northern Italy, a mini-conference on science communication research and practice will take place at the Rockefeller Foundation’s meetings venue in Bellagio, Lake Como. Committee member Jenni Metcalfe is chairing this event, with support from fellow-committee members Toss Gascoigne and Alex Gerber.
The Bellagio event is limited to 22 participants. Most are invited as established experts in the field but there are also two places open to PCST members. In a highly competitive process, the successful applicants were Dr Cary Funk, Associate Director, Research on science and society at the Pew Research Center in Washington DC; and Dr Maria Entradas, Curie Fellow at the London School of Economics.
Further details on all these events are available from the principal organisers.
PCST Network will also be represented in the coming months at conferences of organisations with shared interests. PCST-organised panels featuring members of the Scientific Committee are in the programmes of the International Environmental Communication Association conference taking place in Leicester, England, 29 June-2 July, and the RedPop conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 21-25 August.
